Camp Day 2

Written by Pete on January 1st, 2010

After a little kick double-pole and distance work up at hillside on Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday morning brought us back to Kincaid for some skate intervals.  We focused on interval modes that were high speed, high intensity and would hone our competition skills (making passes in tight spaces, drafting, etc.).  Specifically that meant a couple of downhill intervals followed by 4 or 5 x 400-500 meter intervals on the Kincaid sprint course.  We looked a little sloppy at first, but by the end things were looking quite a bit better.  A bit of video in the evening helped with the review.

A few shots from the end of the downhill intervals (AKA kamikaze downhills):

Camp Day 1

Written by Pete on January 1st, 2010

OK, so this post is a little late, but here are a bunch of pictures from Tuesday morning’s first session of the camp.  We started with some no-pole and V1 technique work on Eliot’s climb and then finished the day with some speedball in the stadium, drawing looks from a number of the athletes here for nationals.

A good note to kick things off on.

Right now, I feel like this though, so til tomorrow, that’s it…

Sixth Annual Ski Your Age in K’s Slated for Boxing Day (December 26)

Written by Pete on December 22nd, 2009

The sixth annual Wells Fargo “Ski Your Age in K’s” is scheduled for the day after Christmas, Saturday, December 26.  The purpose of the event is to get as many people as possible of all ages out the door for some post-Christmas exercise.  The event, for which there is no entry fee, is a fund-raiser for FXC (Fairbanks Cross Country) the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks’ year-round junior race program.

Skiers will have from 10AM until 4PM to try to ski as many kilometers as possible to achieve their “Ski Your Age” goals.  There are bronze, silver, gold and platinum achievement levels, so even if you can’t ski your full age in kilometers, you can earn recognition for your achievement at another level.

There is no entry fee or registration fee, but participants are urged to bring leftovers from their Christmas dinners, so that they and the skiers who ski large numbers of kilometers will have some healthy food to keep fueled up during the day and after they have finished.  Participants are encouraged to donate to FXC in recognition of their efforts in organizing the event.

Skiers will be asked to sign in, noting their age and their goal in kilometers.  A chart showing the bronze, silver, gold and platinum achievement levels for each age will be available, as will maps showing loops varying in length from 1Km to 10Km or more which can be used as a guide.

The event also marks the the annual kickoff of the “Friends of FXC” campaign.  This effort will give people the opportunity to support the FXC program by making donations and receiving recognition for their gift in the form of FXC materials or clothing.  Again this year the Friends of FXC campaign has an anonymous matching donor who will match all donations we receive in association with the Ski Your Age in K’s event up to $5000!

Two-hour group lessons with FXC Head Coach Pete Leonard will be available from 10AM-noon and from 1PM-3PM for $25/person, with a limit of 10 skiers per session.  All proceeds will go to support the FXC program.

In addition to recognizing individual achievements, the top performances will be recognized in several other categories:  family (the family with the most participants and the family that skis the most kilometers), father-son, mother-daughter, father-daughter, mother-son, grandparent-grandchild and 50-50 club (skiers over the age of 50 who ski more than 50Km).

In addition, for those looking for something more strenuous, there will be a sunup-to-sundown challenge, in which skiers have from sunrise (10:58AM) until sunset (2:45PM) to ski their age, or 50Km, whichever is greater.

Town Race #1

Written by Pete on November 28th, 2009

A few photos from last Saturday’s F’banks Town Race Opener.  With the near -20 temps, the goal of the day for most everyone was just to ski no faster than breathing through a neck warmer, balaclava or face mask would allow.  Despite the cold, conditions were fairly fast, so many folks chose to skate the freestyle race.

Getting Strong

Written by Pete on November 2nd, 2009

The Scene

The Scene on Halloween

It has been an impressive transformation over the past couple of years as the athletes in the Comp Team have gotten significantly stronger from when FXC was in its infancy.  I guess that’s what happens.  It is really nice as a coach to just be able to sit back, watch and be impressed from time to time.  It is probably also an indication to reexamine what we’re doing and see if there are other areas we need to focus.

Right now we are working on changing all the strength work from the summer and fall into strength on skis.  That means more motions that mimic skiing and a lot of faster movements in the strength room.  Oh, and a bunch of skiing and specific strength too (lest we forget what we’re really after).

First Day on Snow!

Written by Nick C on October 27th, 2009

That’s not the first day on snow- That’s the last day on rollerskis where we played a sweet game of Keep Away (note the soccer ball) where Team Tall destroyed my team without even cheating.

Now on to the real deal…

These guys looked great today doing upperbody work around Smith Lake.

Technique

Written by Pete on October 25th, 2009

Technique had been a theme this past week.  It is there with us nearly everyday.  A couple of examples:

We worked a bunch on bounding technique with the Devos yesterday.  The guys did great!
